The winds ghosted through the trees, sending mysterious whisperings down the lanes of the forest. Shadows of strange creatures flitted to and from the light that the fading sun gave to the forest. Calls of unknown origin echoed above one's head. And the farther you went, the darker it got. Needless to say, most students wouldn't even think about coming here. Which was why it was perfect for Kara's task.
She had snuck out of the common room early. There wasn't much going on, besides the scribble of quills. Many students were studying, the Defense Against the Dark Arts had assigned a pretty heftly homework assignment. Most students were trying to finish it tonight to have the weekend free. Kara just shrugged it off. Worse came to worse, she'd copy Lily's or Remus's. Though both would try to get her to do it herself first. Yeah right, she'd sweet talk the answers out of them first. She had no time for stupid assignments! It was a beautiful Friday night, and perfect for working on her latest project in the spooky old forest. Nothing inspired a prank more then a forest reputed to be haunted! Well, that was probably an exaggeration. But you get the gist of it.
A twig cracked nearby and Kara nearly jumped out of her skin. When nothing jumped out to eat her, she gave a shakey laugh. Chill, Walker! It's nothing but a bloody twig! These woods aren't haunted, you've snuck in here thousands of times! she admonished herself. Still, she found herself quite cautious as she crept through the twisted trees and shadows. Well, you had to be carefully really. If you went past the fringe and outer edge of the forest, the centaurs might not take likely to you. Thankfully, Kara never had a problem with them. She mainly stuck to a small clearing on the outer edge of the forest. Secluded, yet it had a path that led out of the forest quickly enough. And she was careful never to leave a mess. That was why she never brought dungbombs here, she didn't want to attract something. Or piss something off.
The hollowed-out clearing came into her view and she stepped in it with an audible sigh of relief. She carefully made her way to the center, where a flat stone and log made a perfect workspace for her. Out here, she wouldn't be interrupted by anyone from the school. Or if someone did come, it was a very low chance that they would find her hiding place. The trees bowed over the clearing, sometimes protectively, sometimes menacingly. If it wasn't for the denizens of the forest, Kara might find this a perfect place for a Halloween party or a good practical joke. The spookey atmospheres, the already haunted-rumors going around school, and the tension that built in you the farther you went in. You felt the hair on the back of your neck rise up. Goosebumps found their way everywhere on you. You turned around every moment, certain that something was following you. Innocent noises turned into the stalking of some beast. Darkness held monsters that wanted to take you away from the light. Yes, it would have been a perfect place for Halloween prank. And she was trying to capture that spookiness for a prank of her own.
She sat down on the darkened log, placing her bag next to her feet. The log looked like it had survived a huge forest fire, yet no forest fire she knew of had razed through this forest. Very creepy. She rubbed her arms briskly, feeling the goosebumps beginning to appear on her arms even through the thick coat she was adorning. Kara glanced around once, and was slightly mollified with nothing in sight. Then again, that could mean that something was out there as well, hiding... Walker, snap out of it already! she ordered herself. You're here to plan a prank, not shrink in fright from bloody fairy tales! That gave her the edge to sit up straight and open up the overnight bag at her feet. Not like she was staying in this place overnight. It was just the best disguise. If anyone asked where she had been going, she would tell them a sleepover in, say, the RoR or somewhere else weird, like the Astronomy Tower. Then scurry out of the castle as fast as she could. The perfect cover that had worked everytime.
First things first. She pulled out a piece of parchment and spread it out on the rock, immediately absorbing herself in the details. These were the general idea of the prank she wanted. All she had to do was figure out how to capture the spookiness of the forest and use that. Then, bye-bye Marauder's prank, hello Queen of Dungbombs's finale! A hint of a smirk was on her lips at the thought of outdoing the boys. That would be the highlight of her year! They may have outdone her before, but not this year. She was determined not to lose. And so determined, she wasn't paying any attention to her surroundings, or anyone that could be there.
